Renacer. A quick Google search shows that this means “to be reborn” in Spanish. It’s a pretty fitting title then. Senses Fail have gone through several line-up changes in their decade long career, and Renacer, the band’s fifth studio album does sort of feel like a rebirth. Take away the background though, and what you’re left with is a bunch of genuinely great songs. ‘Holy Mountain’ mingles sludgy choruses with fast-paced hardcore punk breakdowns. The opening refrain of ‘Glass’ sounds like it wouldn’t go amiss on a Biffy Clyro album and the anthemic highs of ‘Canine’ add yet more dimension. In fact, Renacer has so many different sounds that it would be unfair to continue placing names on Senses Fail’s new, redefined direction.
One thing that’s for sure though is that this is an impressive and essential listen.
