A particular female record company owner tweeted a couple of weeks ago “Is Mike Duce the hardcore Morrissey??” She certainly doesn’t seem be far off the money. Compared to Far Q, World Record is a much more toned down listen, in both the aggressiveness of the riffs and the vocals. It is much more focused on the hooks in the songs. It is a change that ultimately allows a lot of the messages and stories that Duce expresses in his lyrics to come across to the listener in a much clearer and defined way than with the previous album.
Duce has the fantastic ability to incorporate and address so many issues within his songs beyond the staple topics of love and loss. Retrospectively, he could be a voice for his generation in the feelings and thoughts of this time. World Record is in essence an ‘everyman’ record, songs such as ‘Uni 9mm’ & ‘Working For The Man By Day, Sticking It To The Man By Night’ are songs that almost anyone could relate to and reflects on the conscience in modern society. This is the ability that Morrissey had when he was at his prime with The Smiths. World Record is a great collection of songs that is an interesting step forward from Far Q and really sees’s Duce at his most vulnerable on ‘Another Sad Song’, showing that the band is more than a one trick pony. This potentially could be record of the year.
