Record Label: Rise

Tim Landers of Boston indie rockers Transit and Brad Wiseman of Walnut Creek, CA pop punk outfit This Time Next Year join forces on their side project MISSER to follow up last years EP with a full length release. All that time in vans on tour together has spawned one of the most epic bromances of all time and ironically given birth to material that is commercially a lot stronger than anything they’ve released under their separate enterprises. There are similarities between early Brand New and Motion City Soundtrack records but the LP also showcases a considered approach to songwriting that drags these tracks out of the pop punk pack and into the realms of the mainstream.

College radio hits and feel-good beer-soaked sing-alongs abound on this record and you’ve got just enough time to learn all the words before their two sets at Slam Dunk Festival. Highly recommended listening.

Adelaide

The Red Bull Bedroom Jam results are in… After 16 weeks of bedroom based shows from up and coming talent, the industry expert judges – Daniel P Carter, Ben Patashnik, Andy Copping, Becky Sugden – have made their selection and the bands leading the festival chart have been chosen.

The results and who will be performing at Slam Dunk, Download and Hevy Fest this year are:

Dead Harts
Dead Harts were the first band to play a Bedroom Jam show this year. The Nottinghamshire based hardcore punk group have played with the likes of Feed The Rhino, While She Sleeps, Martyr and Red Bull Bedroom Jam alumni, Heights.

I Divide
I Divide are a rock five-piece from Exeter. Having already supported a strong list of bands including, Deaf Havana, InMe, Senses Fail and Protest The Hero, the judges thought they were set to take it took the next level.

Mechanical Smile
Alternative Rock outfit, Mechanical Smile were the only band in the 15 who played Bedroom Jam shows from north of the border. The Scottish four-piece, who had just launched their new EP ‘Into The Surface’ at the time of recording their show, have previously played with Kassidy and Young Legionnaires.

Reachback
Hailing from Harlow, Reachback were the 14th band to play a Bedroom Jam show and the second to last band to be selected to play one on the strength of their online Buzz. They played a great show, impressing the judges enough to get them through to the festival stage.

Strangle Kojak
The Birmingham based rock four-piece Strangle Kojak have previously supported the likes of You Me At Six, Not Advised and The Beat. They entered Red Bull Bedroom Jam by uploading their track ‘Careless’ in January and had an impressive reaction from their fans, gaining enough support to get them through to the Bedroom Jam show stage (and now beyond).

The Jellycats
The Jellycats are this year’s Festival Buzz Chart topping act, getting through to the festival stage on the strength of their fans support alone. The Essex based Ska Punk/Pop band put their all into their Bedroom Jam show and are set to join the other seven bands on the Red Bull Bedroom Jam festival stage.

Golden Tanks
This year’s Wild Card band – the band picked from any of this year’s Bedroom Jam entries by the judges are Golden Tanks. The five-piece post-hardcore band played the 16th and last Bedroom Jam show and automatically went through to the festival stage.

Record Label: Rise

After eight years any band faces high fan expectation on the release of new material, none more so than Floridian cult favourites Hot Water Music. It’s relieving then that both new and old fans should find plenty to love about latest effort Exister. There’s a definite maturity and diversity to the flavours of punk being dished up on the album, probably best displayed on the marvelously juxtaposed opening duo of ‘Mainline’ and ‘Boy, You’re Gonna Hurt Someone’. There are some huge choruses nestled in this collection of authentic and earthy songs, no doubt helped by residue from front man Chuck Ragan’s solo material, meaning you’ll be humming tracks like ‘Drag My Body’ back after the first listen.

This album is definitely up there with some of HWM’s best records and feels like a breath of fresh air amidst this year’s releases.

Record Label: Hassle

As far as two-piece garage bands go, you could do a lot worse than DZ Deathrays. This debut full length release from the Aussie party kings should tick all the boxes for radio and press-hype pundits and goes some way towards translating the energy and chaos of their live show, but this is an album that needs sinking into with undivided attention.

Never quite hitting the turbo charged chaos of contemporaries like Pulled Apart By Horses, there’s more of an understated blues groove to their material that makes for a less exciting recorded experience. In a live setting these songs crackle with energy and swagger, but on this recording it’s down-tempo and intelligent tracks like ‘Play Until You’re Dead’ that come off best, showing that there’s more to this band than a fat riff.

New York’s newest hope have stepped up to the plate and hit it right out of the park with their debut full length release. Fans of contemporaries The Menzingers will be fawning over this release and rejoicing in the rebirth of that good-old-fashioned warm, rich-toned, intelligent guitar music. It’s the sort you can sink into whilst pouring over the sleeve notes, finding new intricacies in the lyrics that you thought you knew back to front. There’s an indefinable magic at work in these songs that drags you in and threatens to keep you forever, with echoes of Brand New, Jimmy Eat World, Thursday, Weezer and even Danzig all at play.

Twelve Years is an almost perfect marriage of musicianship, punk poetry and real heart and soul that we can’t recommend enough; if Daytrader carry on like this the sky’s the limit, these songs are good enough to live in.

They have released the below statement:

“Writing letters like this is never fun or easy, but it is with heavy heart that we have decided to call time on Fei Comodo. Although it might seem to many of you like this has come out of the blue, in truth it’s something we’ve all struggled with for some time now.”

Record Label: Epitaph

10 albums, 21 years and several line-up changes later, Pennywise return to their roots with latest offering All Or Nothing. Fans of early 90’s American punk will nestle into these songs and never want to leave.

There’s enough of the best of contemporaries like Bad Religion, The Offspring and NOFX to draw in new fans and the songwriting is still of a very high standard; ‘Stand Strong’ in particular is an early stand out track. There’s a healthy mix of all the punk-rock subgenres on this record with hints of Anti-Flag and Weezer peeking through on ‘Let Us Hear Your Voice’ and Pennywise manage to regain their political bite and venom without sounding like a broken record.

In a world of auto-tune and backing tracks, it is refreshing to hear a record with such minimal production, relying solely on beefy warm tones, musicianship and songwriting to carry the material. This is top class four-to-the-floor stomp with a message, and long may it continue.
