Waiting for Deaf Havana’s second full length has felt like waiting for a loved one to return from the armed forces after a long time away in new and fearsome places. It’s taken longer than planned and they may have been through the wars creatively, but here they are with Fools And Worthless Liars.
Opening track ‘The Past Six Years’, comes as something of a surprise. It delicately leads us in to an album which is steeped in meaningful and poignant messages, many of which are seemingly close to frontman James Veck-Gilodi’s heart. This notion is highly prominent in the single ‘I’m A Bore, Mostly’; it’s like an audio diary of his personal struggles as a creative musician.
With these messages, comes a generous dollop of nostalgia. We are reminded that times are changing and this point seems to sit strongly within many of the songs. ‘Hunstanton Pier’ and ‘Things Change, Friends Leave And Life Doesn’t Stop For Anybody’ are glowing examples of this, as James sings passionately of past experiences.
Since their return, Deaf Havana have matured, bringing with them meaning and a sense of vulnerability. However it’s pleasing to hear that they have not forgotten how to write a lively rock album. Fools And Worthless Liars still holds with it, the foundations of the band who they’ve always been and will always be.
